Bradford White vs A.O. Smith Water Heaters: Which Is Better for Philadelphia Homes?
Two of the biggest names in water heaters. If you're getting a replacement, you'll likely end up with one of these. Here's our take โ from a contractor who installs and services both.
The Quick Answer
We install Bradford White as our standard recommendation. That's not because A.O. Smith is bad โ it's a fine product. It's because Bradford White better fits how we operate and what we think matters for homeowners.
Bradford White: Why We Chose It
Pro-Channel Only
Bradford White is only sold through licensed contractors and wholesale distributors. You can't buy one at Home Depot or Lowe's. This matters because:
- Every unit is professionally installed (no DIY disasters we have to fix later)
- The warranty is backed by a contractor relationship, not a retail receipt
- Parts availability through contractor supply houses is excellent
Build Quality
Bradford White's Vitraglas lining and Hydrojet sediment reduction system hold up well in Philadelphia's water. We see fewer premature failures compared to consumer-grade units. Their gas valves (Honeywell/Resideo) are reliable and parts are readily available.
Serviceability
When something goes wrong โ and eventually something will โ Bradford White units are straightforward to diagnose and repair. Components are standardized, replacement parts are stocked locally at supply houses, and the tech support line actually helps.
Made in America
Bradford White manufactures in Middleville, Michigan. Not a dealbreaker for most people, but worth noting.
A.O. Smith: What It Does Well
Widely Available
A.O. Smith is available at Lowe's, through plumbing wholesalers, and through contractors. This means more options for homeowners, but also means plenty of DIY and handyman installs that may or may not be done correctly.
Broad Product Line
A.O. Smith has a huge range โ from basic residential to high-end hybrid heat pump water heaters. If you want a heat pump water heater, A.O. Smith's Voltex line is solid.
Good Warranty
A.O. Smith warranties are competitive. Their 10-year models are well-regarded.

๐ท Get a Quote โWhat About Rheem, Rinnai, and Others?
Rheem: Solid mid-range brand. Available at Home Depot. Good for basic residential use. We don't stock it, but we'll service it.
Rinnai: Strong in the tankless space. If we're not installing Navien for a tankless job, Rinnai is the alternative. Not as common for tank water heaters.
State Water Heaters: Actually made by A.O. Smith (same parent company). Essentially the same product with different branding, sold through different distribution channels.
Our Recommendation
For most Philadelphia homeowners replacing a standard gas or electric tank water heater: Bradford White. The combination of build quality, serviceability, and professional-only installation gives you a better long-term outcome. The slightly higher unit cost is offset by reliability and warranty support backed by a local contractor.
If you specifically want a heat pump water heater, A.O. Smith's Voltex line is worth considering. But for a standard tank replacement โ which is 90%+ of what we do โ Bradford White is our pick, and it's what we recommend and install.
